I have been looking for something like this site for a long time. All I want is some good homely advice on cooking and baking. I am fed up with all these chefs on the tele that talk about food in such a poncy way. The only cook I can get on with is Delia, and even with her, at times she can make a mountain out of a mole hill. This current 15 minute programme from Jamie Oliver is also an absolute joke. Far more time consuming, and expensive than any normal person can do in this time. Ridiculous. I am sure that people watch all these programmes but actually don't do any cooking for themselves at all.

I have a well-worn copy of Farmhouse Kitchen, a book from the TV programme broadcast from Yorkshire television many years ago. I use this a lot, which is also nice and basic. Rose Elliot is a a great source for me too. I just want the gran that I didn't have to give me the basics about cooking. Thanks for this site, and I will be using it a lot. I like to cook, but in the way that you do Sylvia, not as we are "supposed" to do by all that we watch on the tele.

Thanks for your efforts

It is amazing with all this new trend type cooking on tv, many people prefer to cook sensibly and in such hard times we all have to watch out budgets. Sylvia does a sterling job reching out to many people with her practical and true ways of every day cooking. I personally thank her, we need this type of approach out there to show more people who struggle to cook, who end up spending a lot of money on food with promotions on tv making it harder not easier. I too have the old Farmhouse kitchen books featuring Dorothy Sleitholme when she was on Yorkshire television with her guests , back in the seventies to mid eighties. Great cooking times along with BE Ro flour and those decades of practical small cook books we use and like the easy recipes and not just stuck on a shelf gathering dust. Happy Cooking Everyone.

Welcome to the once a week kitchen! We're going to try and get more people to the forums within the next few weeks so hopefully soon this will be a good community where people can share their ideas and recipes!
